We have so many great customers! Let's meet Mike (with his dog, Arni).

"My favorite is your Peppermint Lip Balm, because I'm a guy and not big on the other flavors. Without protection, during winter especially, my lips used to peel and crack, and even bleed — who needs THAT? But this stuff really prevents chapped lips and feels refreshing, not gooey or perfumey. And it lasts FOREVER! I don't know how it compares to the cost of other lip balms because I've stopped buying them." - Mike

Summertime skin challenges have easy solutions!

1. Mild Sunburns: That moment when your skin is on fire and you need to get out of your bathing suit knowing that clothes are going to scratch your tender skin - ow! I reach for Super Skin Salve .It's anti-inflammatory properties soothe immediately, adds much needed moisture and herbs speed along the healing process.

2. Bug bites: Super Skin Salve again. My husband hardly ever gets mosquito bites, but the little buggers lay in wait for me. My bites swell up for days on end unless I use a little bit of this salve. Those anti-inflammatory properties and herbs work wonders here too.

3. Gardening Hands: I love spending time in my flowerbeds but my hands can literally take a beating form all the grubbing and digging. Afterwards, I wash them well and reach for some Calendula Cream. Calendula is the perfect counterbalance to the dryness and mild repair needed. And since the creams are never greasy, I can enjoy a cup of tea without dropping my mug.

4. Toenail fungus: We all want to wear our cute summer sandals with confidence. Two words, Relief Salve. Black Walnut oil is a powerful anti fungal and combined with tea tree essential oil, it's exactly what you are seeking.

5. After Beach Scratchiness: You're back home after a great day at the beach when you notice that your skin feels tight, maybe even with a hint of sandpapery feel. I reach for Lavender & Sandalwood Cream. A great moisture cream containing anti-inflammatory essential oils and their scent will transform you!

6. Bare Feet Care: Months of running all over with bare feet can feel like freedom but hardened calluses can be a real challenge. I reach for Peppermint Forest Foot Cream. My favorite is applying it at night and wearing an old pair of socks overnight. I wake up to my feet looking a feeling fabulous!

Natural Tattoo Care - good stuff, no gunk

Tattoo Care - Gunk vs. the good stuff

Tattoo Care

Getting a tattoo is a big deal to your skin and any good tattoo artist is going to spend some time telling you how to take care of your tattoo after you leave their shop. I peppered my artist with all sorts of questions and left with her standard full sheet of specific instructions.

Many of the tattoo care products out there are petroleum or PABA based and I had a hard time putting that gunk on my skin just to help my tattoo heal. It did heal, but the tattoo was really itchy, peeled a lot and needed another hour of follow up work, so frustrating. I felt like I had failed my skin.

After the touch up, I followed all the regular instructions but substituted cocoa butter for the first week instead of the gunk. I would warm a few pieces of coca butter in my fingers until it was soft enough to apply easily. For the second through third weeks I used my Calendula Cream. The result? It never got itchy and there was no more peeling. In fact, it looked and felt great the entire time and still does 2 1/2 years later!

It's important to follow those instructions on cleanliness and more, but it's nice to know that tattoos don't need the gunk either!

Have you ever considered - what is a "Micro Bead"?

Did you know that when a Face Cleanser features "micro beads" it actually means "miniature plastic balls"? All those mini plastic balls will get rinsed off your face, go down the drain and then what? Certainly they won't be safely bio-degrading, they will remain tiny little balls of plastic.

Look for face cleansers that feature ingredients that will break down easily & naturally. Our Botanical Face Cleanser uses ground Adzuki Beans to gently clean your face. Good for your skin, good for the environment!

A little winter health advice from Susan

This week I have many friends and co-workers who are just recovering from being very ill or just going down for the count. They keep asking me what remedies I recommend to keep my family healthy so let me share my favorite item. If nothing else, find yourself a high quality Elderberry Syrup. I buy Honey Garden's Elderberry Syrup at my local natural foods co-op.

Elderberries have long been used in Native America and the Vermont farm kitchen. Traditionally used for general well-being during the cold season, they naturally contain Vitamin C. Apitherapy honey has never been heated or filtered, and thus it retains the beneficial traces of pollen, propolis, and beeswax which the flowers and bees have provided.

A few doses a day at the onset helps most of my family's colds remain short and manageable with a little rest and lots of liquids. If you have a lot of upper respiratory congestion, there is nothing better than this stuff to break up all that gunk and send it packing!

A Great Article on Winter Skincare

I came across an interesting British Press article that touches on a variety of skin issues such as rosacea and eczema. It suggests some of my own best practices:

Be prepared to change your skincare regime for winter. I apply products more frequently all winter and reach for Calendula Cream most often whereas in the summer, I reach for Lavender + Sandalwood Cream. Keep in mind—I live in wintery Vermont.

Avoid washing in really hot water and using soaps and detergents. I keep the hot baths to a minimum and always use my Botanical Face Cleanser—not soap—to wash my face.

Try to consume only good quality foods and oils. It's those same oils that I use in my products for your skin!

Our Skin's Sense Of Time Helps Protect Against UV Damage

I came across an interesting article written by NPR's Maanvi Singh about how our skin protects us from the sun according to the time of day.
Sweet Orange Lip Balm

Excerpts from the article:

"We all feel the biological master clock, ticking deep within our brains, that tells us when to sleep and when to wake. Well, it turns out that our skin cells have a circadian rhythm of their own.

Researchers have found that depending on the time of day, our skin's stem cells busy themselves with different types of tasks. During the day, our epidermis works to defend itself against ultraviolet light from the sun. But at night, it focuses instead on regenerating cells that were damaged during the day. This built-in system helps protect us from premature ageing and skin cancer."

It's good to know that our skin is already on task to protect us from everyday sun exposure. Imagine how well it will do if we select good products, eat well and rest completely at night?
